![]() Schmidt wants to create a new world order by destroying the old one, in which the strong no longer oppress the weak. Thus we have an effective foil for Steve to work against. Schmidt kills every guard in the camp with his bear hands. He finds their corpses, bloodlessly white, lying on soft, scarlet snow in the main yard. He brings his most fiercely loyal troops, many of whom he saved from certain death because of their ethnicity and attempts to rescue his family. This is when Schmidt snaps and takes the unfinished serum. He decided to help them escape to Switzerland, but they were caught at the border and sent to the camps. Using his influence, Schmidt kept his family safe until things became far too dangerous. He looked aryan enough and kept climbing up the ladder till he become division head of the yet unnamed Nazi science division. Schmidt joined the party at its inception, a true believer. I present the solution:>! Red Skull is a Jew!< There were hints of genius in one of his initial scenes with him, when he kills the Nazi overseers. However, the character isn't irredeemably boring. He's a lazy, cliché villain doing tropey bad guy stuff and its terrible. The point at which the plot collapses is around when Red Skull is first revealed. Sophisticated dialogue and character morphs into empty action set pieces and all the build up of Steve as an individual just feels wasted. The brilliance of the first half is tarnished by the raw stupidity of the second. Its one of the 'good' Marvel films in my opinion.
